Last year (2024), I worked intensively with some of my professional wind instrument colleagues to improve the response and sound of the alphorn. Some players especially trombonists and trumpeters prefer a light response with little resistance, while others mostly French horn players prefer a stronger resistance and a more centered sound.

By using different tubes made of different woods and with different bores, every player can customize my "Franzenhorn" or "Franzenhorn Light" model to their individual needs. The price remains unchanged.

The leadpipe plays a crucial role in the response, accuracy, and sound of any wind instrument.

Every player has their own individual preferences. Generally, trombonists and trumpeters prefer a very light response, while French horn players prefer a stronger blowing resistance. Therefore, in addition to the standard reed, I have developed a new series of leadpipes that allow every player to realize their own preferences. Each reed has a different shape and thus a different response and sound.

The new reeds can be tested at the Alphorn Center, or I can send them to you for testing.

NEW: Reflector for better self-awareness

Almost every alphorn player has experienced that playing outdoors is much more difficult and that more notes are missed than in an enclosed space. The reason: the sound fades immediately, and you hear yourself much less clearly. To remedy this, I invented and patented a reflector for self-awareness. An acrylic glass disc placed on a wooden base in front of the bell reflects the sound back to the player, making it much easier to hear yourself. This allows the player to exert less energy and thus play more easily. The reflector is also a great help in a large group where you can hardly hear yourself.

NEW: Buzzing tube

Blowing into the mouthpiece for a few minutes is highly effective. A buzz tube attached to the mouthpiece increases air resistance and effectiveness. The resistance can be adjusted through two openings.

Alphorn tuning 432 Hz

The current tuning frequency is 442 hertz. Some scientists, including composer Giuseppe Verdi, believe that tuning to 432 hertz is more pleasant for the human ear and the psyche. However, this is controversial. I personally find playing the alphorn at 432 hertz more pleasant than at 442, and have therefore developed an adapter that lowers the alphorn′s pitch to 432 hertz. It is available from the Alphorn Center.
